Flow Structure around Landing Gear Models

This project is initiated through a collaboration with Bombardier. Landing gears are known to be a major source of aircraft noise due to their bluff nature and complex geometry. Aerodynamic noise is a result of the fluctuating flow and its interactions with surface components. Surface details of landing gear tires are found to have improtant effects on the noise generation. The project will explore the effects of various groove patterns and tire shapes on the flow past landing gear models. Knowledge of flow patterns will make it possible to understand the sources of noise. This, in turn, can lead the way to more quieter landing gear designs.
