Admission Requirements and Application Procedure:

Admission to any of the graduate programs is in accordance with the general regulations of the School of Graduate Studies. Candidates for the M.Eng. degree shall hold a B.A.Sc. degree from the University of Toronto or an equivalent four-year degree in engineering. Admission to the M.A.Sc. program requires a Bachelor's degree in a four-year undergraduate program in engineering, mathematics, physics, or chemistry. Admission requirements for Ph.D. studies include a research-intensive Master's degree in applied science, engineering, mathematics, physics, or chemistry and demonstrated ability to perform advanced research. Minimum academic requirements are stated in the SGS calendar. Students with excellent perfomance during the 1st year of an M.A.Sc. program at UTIAS may request to be transfered directly into the Ph.D. program at the end of their first year without having to complete the M.A.Sc. thesis.

Applicants who obtained their undergraduate degrees in universities outside of Canada and the USA must also write the GRE General Test and the TOEFL (including a test of written English). Ph.D. applicants whose master's degrees are obtained in accredited Canadian or US universities may be waived of the TOEFL requirement. Applicants should request the testing organizations to send the scores directly to the University of Toronto. Applicants are reminded to note the 'Department' and 'Institution' codes for these tests.

  • GRE: Institution code is 0982 and the Department code is 1601.
  • TOEFL: Institution code is 0982 and the Department code is 63.

No specific minima are set by UTIAS for the GRE scores. The required minimum TOEFL scores are 580 for the paper-based and 240 for the computer-based formats; the TWE minimum is 5.0. [For the new internet-based TOEFL test (iBT), the required minimum scores are 22/30 for both the 'writing' and 'speaking' sections with an overall score of 93/120.]

Applicants must provide official (hard copy) transcripts for all post-secondary programs completed, attempted, or in progress. Transcripts must list the years of study, courses taken and grades received. In cases where the program was completed, the applicant must also provide proof of degree conferral.

Applicants who attend(ed) non-English speaking universities must have the universities provide official transcripts and proof of degree conferral in the original language, as well as in English.

Universities must forward transcripts in sealed envelopes bearing the institutional stamp or signature across the back flap DIRECTLY to the UTIAS Graduate Office:

Residency:

The minimum residence (full-time) requirement for the M.A.Sc. degree program is one year, although it normally takes longer owning to the demands of the research thesis. The Ph.D. program requires a minimum of two years (after completion of M.A.Sc. degree) but it normally takes longer. It is the joint responsibility of the student and his/her research supervisor to ensure that research theses are completed in a timely manner. The M.Eng. program, which consists of a minimum of 10 courses, could be completed in 3 terms on a full-time basis. The M.Eng. program may also be pursued on a part-time basis.

Fees for the 2011/12 Academic Year:

Domestic tuition and fees: (Canadian citizens and permanent residents)
MASc and PhD Students: $6,885 + incidental fees of $1,156.36 = $8,041.36
MEng students: $10,295 + incidental fees of $1,156.36 = $11,451.36

International tuition and fees: (Visa students)

MASc and PhD Students: $16,082 + incidental fees of $1,156.32 = $17,922.36
MEng students (full-time): $29,055 + incidental fees of $1,156.36 = $30,895.36

Financial Support:

Minimum Financial Support:
In accordance with the UTIAS financial support policy, students with satisfactory academic performance will receive a minimum level of financial support for the first twenty (20) months of M.A.Sc. studies and for years 1-4 in the Ph.D. program. This minimum level of support will include all external scholarships and fellowships. The minimum amounts for the upcoming academic year 2012-13 are: $16,000 plus (domestic or international) tuition and fees for PhD students per 12-month-year, and $15,000 plus (domestic or international) tuition and fees for MASc students per 12-month-year. Domestic students who have major external scholarships, such as NSERC, OGS, OGSST, etc., will receive $10,000/year supplements, bringing their total support well above the minimum level. International students who have major external scholarships, such as their own government's scholarship programs, may also receive supplemental financial support at the discretion of the institute.  Students are strongly encouraged to apply for external scholarships/fellowships. All external awards, major or otherwise must be disclosed to the UTIAS Graduate Office at the time of receipt of notification of the award.

Students in years of study not covered by the financial support policy may receive financial assistance from their supervisors' research grants/contracts.

External Scholarships/Fellowships:
Students are strongly encouraged to apply for external scholarships/ fellowships for which they are eligible. Not only will the external awards trigger the $10,000 supplement, they will also enhance the applicant's curriculum vitae. Major Canadian scholarships include NSERC, OGS, and OGSST; NSERC and OGSST are restricted to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, but the OGS is available to visa students. Visa students are strongly encouraged to apply for scholarships in their own countries for studies abroad.

Kenneth M. Molson Fellowship for Studies in Aerospace Engineering at UTIAS:
This fellowship was established with a generous donation from the Kenneth M. Molson Foundation and matching funds from the University of Toronto and the Ontario Government. The income from the fund is used to contribute to the financial support for 1st-year M.A.Sc students, and Ph.D students in years 1 through 4. The selection will be in accordance with the University's Policy on Student Awards and the conditions specified by the Ontario Student Opportunity Fund program.

Teaching Assistantships are available to students with appropriate qualifications. Students must apply for teaching assistantships during the summer for the academic year commencing in September.

Cost of Living:

The exact amount with respect to cost of living varies, depending on individual student's personal situation and life style. Choice of accommodation is a major factor in establishing the cost of living for a student in Toronto. University residences are in short supply, and most students rent appartment or rooms near the Institute. It is our experience that most graduate students are able to cover living expenses based on funding package .

Foreign Applicants:

Foreign students should check with their nearest Employment and Immigration Canada Office for regulations affecting them. The language of instruction at the Institute is English.

International students are also encouraged to contact the International Student Center, U of T. to find information related to visa students, such as applying for or renewing study permits, entry visas, working in Canada, and immigration to Canada.

Student Associations:

Graduate Students' Union

Applicants may wish to contact students already enrolled in the department by writing or phoning the Graduate Students' Union (GSU). The GSU is the association to which all graduate students belong.

Life at UTIAS is never boring; when they are not working, students have a lot of choice when it comes to activities. For instance, the field behind the Institute hosts the regular Tuesday and Thursday lunch soccer games.

Playing pool and ping-pong in the cafeteria.

The students at UTIAS are represented by the Aerospace Students Association (ASA). An executive consisting of a president, five councillors and two activities coordinators (social and athletic) is elected annually in September. The ASA organizes student activities including film nights, barbeques, and coffee and doughnut breaks. An active year-round sports program is also maintained by the students. Noon hour soccer, baseball, basketball and tennis are played on the sports field from spring until late fall. Weekly hockey games at a local rink and ski outings comprise the winter schedule. Bridge, chess, and billiards are played at the Institute throughout the year. Facilities for swimming and golf are available nearby.
