At the I.I. Glass Lecture, the Etkin Medal is awarded every year to the top-performing MASc student for the quality of their thesis and overall academic achievement. Since 1996, it has commemorated Professor Bernard Etkin’s enduring contributions to aerospace engineering, research, and teaching.
The I.I. Glass Lecture, also established in 1996, has commemorated the career of Professor Irvine Glass, a pioneering figure in shock wave research and one of UTIAS’s most eminent professors. This year, Professor Hanspeter Schaub of the University of Colorado at Boulder, a leading expert in spacecraft dynamics and control, delivered the lecture, sharing his research on using machine learning for astrodynamics applications.

The 2025 Etkin Medal was awarded to Reuben Haklander for his exceptional research in the Flow Control & Turbulence Lab.
Haklander’s MASc work on trailing-edge noise in the UTIAS Hybrid Anechoic Wind Tunnel addressed complex challenges in broadband aeroacoustic measurement, integrating sophisticated instrumentation, signal processing, and flow diagnostics. The quality, independence, and depth of his work are well above the level expected at his career stage. He has already produced high-impact research, including a peer-reviewed publication in Applied Acoustics (2025) and multiple contributions to leading international conferences (AIAA/CEAS, CASI). His work is gaining recognition within the aeroacoustics community, with growing citation impact and clear relevance to benchmark problems in airframe noise.
“The quality, independence, and depth of his work are well above the level expected at his career stage,” says Professor Philippe Lavoie, Haklander’s MASc supervisor.
Our graduate program offers students the opportunity to conduct world-class research alongside leading faculty in state-of-the-art facilities.
