UTIAS Student Team Test Fires Rocket Engine

On August 13, 2013 undergraduate and graduate students from the University of Toronto Aeronautics Team Rocketry Division (UTAT Rocketry) performed a static test fire of their hybrid rocket engine. Named the Bia engine and fueled by a mixture of wax and aluminum, this student-built engine is capable of delivering a 10lb payload to an altitude of 10,000ft.

UTAT Rocketry was newly founded in 2012 by UTIAS student Jeffrey Osborne and focuses on rocket engineering design. The team is a division of the University of Toronto Aeronautics Team, managed by UTIAS student Mina Mitry, and is a multi-divisional team focusing exclusively on aerospace design. Founded in 2004, today the team has over 100 undergraduate and graduate students working on a variety of projects. In the upcoming year, UTAT will focus its efforts on the SAE Aero Design competition for remote controlled planes, the Unmanned Systems Canada and Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International competitions for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and the Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition for rocketry.

UTAT is always looking for passionate and talented members to join our team. If you are interested, visit utat.skule.ca.
